New Students

Starting a yoga practice is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. At Riverside, we aim to make yoga as accessible and approachable as possible, and want to make sure you feel comfortable and calm for your first class with us. If you have any questions we do not answer here, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Tips for New Students

  1. Start by taking our Gentle Flow or Yoga Basics classes. These classes move at slower pace and are perfect for new students. Take advantage of our new student special! We also offer private lessons at the studio, which are perfect for those new to a yoga practice.

  2. Arrive at least 10 minutes early. That will give you plenty of time to fill out any necessary paperwork and prepare yourself for class.

  3. Drink plenty of water! It’s important to stay hydrated before and after class. You are more than welcome to bring a water bottle into the studio to place next to your mat to drink during class. We also have water for sale at the studio.

  4. Wear comfortable clothes. We recommend clothing that will not restrict your movement; clothing that lies close to the body is best so it does not get in the way as you move.

  5. Yoga is typically practiced barefoot. Shoes can be left at the door. If you must wear shoes for medical reasons, please bring a clean pair of indoor only shoes to change into when you arrive at our studio. Outdoor shoes are not allowed in the studio.

  6. Silence your cell phone and leave it in the cubbies at the studio. Let this be your technology-free time.

  7. Tell us about yourself! Don’t be afraid to talk to the instructor before class. Tell us if you are brand new to yoga or if there are any injuries you are working with. Like with any other form of exercise, please check with your physician before practice if you have a serious injury or medical condition.

  8. If nothing else…just breathe.
